The Tecno Spark 5 is another of their latest smartphone to be released by Tecno. The Spark 5 is the latest member of the Spark series. The Spark series are budget smartphones that try to combine mid-range specifications to bring the best experience to Tecno fans at a very low price.
In this review I’m going to go through all the Tecno Spark 5 specifications, it’s capabilities, pros and cons, and finally it’s prices in different countries.
I’m going to go through the specs as follows; Display, Hardware, Memory, Camera, and Battery. First let’s see what you will find in the box after purchasing the smartphone.
In the Box
The phone comes in 4 colors; Ice Jadeite, Spark Orange, Vacation Blue, Misty Grey.
Inside the box you find the phone first, covered in blue and yellow paper and it looks quite elegant. The yellow color is quite appealing.
At the bottom of the box you find; A free plastic cover, earphones, MicroUSB cable, 10W charger.
Specifications and Reviews
The Tecno Spark 5 sports a 6.6 inches IPS LCD display with a screen resolution of 720 x 1600. This leaves the display with a pixel density of 266 PPI.
The display is actually really huge and beautiful as the phone features the punch hole design for the front camera. This leaves you with a huge enough display for gaming or watching movies.
The display is however much better than the ones on the previous Spark series. The screen is pretty bright and the colors are bearable. The 720P display is not perfect or anywhere near detailed but it is usable.
The Tecno Spark 5 runs on Android 10.0 out of the box, with the HIOS 6.1 launcher. It runs on a Mediatek MT6761 Helio A22 chipset and an Octa-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53. The phone utilizes a PowerVR GE8320 GPU which is not great.
The processor on this phone is the same one on the Tecno Spark 4 and the Spark 3 Pro, so there’s no need for upgrading to this device if you’re looking for a better or faster processor.
Again, the memory on the Tecno Spark 5 is the same as the one on the Spark 4. The Spark 5 ships with 32 GB of internal storage and 2 GB of RAM. It also has a dedicated microSDXC slot if you would like to expand your storage.
The 2 GB of RAM is quite small compared to today’s smartphones. However the RAM handles basically well. The phone operates smoothly but it’s not that good when it comes to multi-tasking.
The camera on the Spark 5 is nowhere near perfect. The phone sports a Quad-camera setup at the rear; 13 main camera + 2 MP macro shooter + 2 MP depth sensor + QVGA. A quad-LED flash is also added to the setup.
At the front, the phone utilizes a single 8 MP shooter with a dual-LED flash.
Don’t buy this smartphone expecting high camera performance. In short;
a) Portrait photos are not good
b) Close-up photos are fairly good. They are colorful and there is some detail in them.
c) Landscape photos are good.
d) Macro-photos are actually really good. Maybe it’s because it is love taking them.
e) Pictures from the selfie camera are basically good. But this depends on the person but it can meet your daily Instagram photos and video chats.
The Tecno Spark 5 comes with a bigger battery. It is powered by a 5000 mAh battery which is impressive. This has actually been a huge improvement from the small 3500 mAh batteries on the previous spark series.
The battery last’s for a whole day after heavy usage. If you’re a light smartphone user, this phone will actually do you good, as it can last you 2-3 days.
standard price – $130
Kenya – Ksh 13, 300
Nigeria – Around 48,000 Naira
India – Rs. 10,000
The phone basically offers the same specs and performance as the ones on the Spark 4 and the Spark 3 Pro. The RAM on this device is honestly not enough and the camera performance is below average.
However the battery on this phone is awesome. It lasts really long and it’s perfect if you’re going on a long trip when there is a power outage. In short, if you’re buying this smartphone, the power bank is not needed.
If you already have a Spark 4 or a Spark 3 pro, there’s no need for you to be upgrading to this phone. It has the same camera and memory. But you can upgrade if you’re looking for a newer design and the Android 10 experience. Otherwise, you can check my other review on the Huawei Y7P, Camon 15, and the Ifinix S5 below or just search the device using the search icon in the top right corner of this page.
